newspeak - language was given to man to hide his thoughts
Today I read a lovely headline in the business section of the Mercury News that I just loved - let me share it:
Latest Figures Show Local Economy Recovering
Valley job losses at four-year low
Wouldn't you just love to think how they'd report on numbers that are actually really good - I mean good without spin, of course.
Santa Clara County had about 1,050.000 at the peak of the boom and has since then constantly, every month shed jobs down to 850,000 jobs last month, a loss of 19% in all. The jobless rate in the valley in June was 6.3% and in July 8.7 %. The main reason why it is so low is pobably that everyone who lost their job and couldn't find one for a year or so left - the cost of living here is just too high.
But somehow this is good news - we lost less jobs last month than ever before - Orwell would be proud of us.
Further down the article some nitwit is quoted as saying "...These numbers show the San Jose economy is continuing to begin its economic recovery...". Continuing to begin. Now here we have a man who's not afraid of fearlessly uttering complete BS. Noone will ever be able to quote him with anything specific enough to be called an obvious error. "Continuing to begin" is a phrase so utterly without meaning (how DID this guy ever pass his SATs?) it basically makes the mind reel.
